Our Challenge
Cheltenham Festival week faced extreme sub-zero temperatures, with lows of -8°C at dawn on King George Day. Exposed, well-trodden turf was highly vulnerable, freezing as easily as -1°C without protection. With large racing lines at risk, postponement was a real possibility.

Results
To keep racing on schedule, we deployed a large-scale frost protection strategy. A team of 30+ staff was mobilised to install and remove covers over multiple days, ensuring every running line was fully protected. Frost covers were laid across the track after racing each evening and removed before the first race the following day, with the cycle repeated throughout the week.
Sport & Stadia Timeline:
- 11 March – Covers installed post-racing
- 12 March – Covers removed pre-racing / reinstalled after racing
- 13 March – Same cycle repeated
- 14 March – Covers removed pre-racing, ensuring safe ground conditions
FINAL RESULTS
Project Conclusion
Despite dawn temperatures plummeting to -8°C, the frost protection strategy ensured racing went ahead smoothly with no cancellations and no delays. Across multiple days of severe frost and snow risk, the turf remained fully protected. Thanks to precision planning, round-the-clock operations, and the scalability of our system, the Cheltenham Festival was delivered without interruption, even in the harshest winter conditions.
