MacLeod Pitch Cover
System in Action
MacLeod™ is a raised, semi‑automated pitch cover system built for elite venues. Integrated airflow technology and a central support structure help stadium turf management teams protect the surface in rain, snow and extreme cold, reducing postponements and keeping playing conditions consistent.

FAN HEATER UNIT: CENTRIFUGAL FAN
Creates apex to dispense water & facilitate pitch access. Increases air temperature by transporting warm air along the length of the pitch.
CENTRAL INFLATABLE TUBE: SUPPORT TUBE
Inflates tube to raise apex to 5 / 5.5m. Supplies heat and generates sufficient air flow to regulate temperature, promote grass growth & enhance surface quality.
TRANSLUCENT COVER : 6/7 SHEETS ZIPPED TOGETHER
Hydrophobic membrane repels water. Swift snow removal direct from cover. Insulates soil temperature & provides warm air flow if required.
FIXED ANCHORS AND RATCHET STRAPS
Ensures system is fixed securely when flat or inflated.
SEMI-AUTOMATED REELS: FOR SHEETS AND TUBE
Automatically reels sheets off playing surface. Compact storage (equivalent to 4 car parking bays) or ability to store off-site if required.
ADDITIONAL ELEMENTS
Snow/Water removal using specialist equipment.
The industry leading, climate controlled pitch cover system.
The MacLeod Cover is Sports & Stadia’s semi-automated, raised pitch cover system, one of the most widely specified pitch covers in professional sport, protecting natural, hybrid and synthetic surfaces from rain, snow and extreme cold. Designed for football clubs, cricket grounds, stadium operators and NFL fields, it’s engineered to reduce postponements and keep playing conditions consistent.
Combining lightweight, translucent covers with a central support tube and integrated airflow technology, the MacLeod system lets sunlight through while shielding turf from the elements, supporting healthy growth and match-ready surfaces. You can buy the MacLeod Cover directly, or bring us in to run it for you as part of a retained pitch protection service – see below.
Modular cover design
Durable zipped sheets enable full‑pitch or partial coverage, with flexible configurations to suit different surfaces and schedules.
Central Inflated Tube
Creates a raised apex (approx. 5-6m) and helps distribute ambient or warmed airflow beneath the cover for climate control.
Heating and ventilation
A fan‑heater system delivers warm airflow beneath the cover to maintain or increase soil temperature, supporting consistent turf recovery and healthy grass growth.
Efficient Deployment and Removal
Semi‑automated reels speed up installation and retrieval, reducing labour time and helping grounds teams respond quickly to changing weather.
FAQs
How does the MacLeod Cover system work?
MacLeod combines six or seven translucent sheets zipped together with a central inflatable support tube that raises the apex to 5-5.5m. A fan heater unit (centrifugal fan) increases air temperature and transports warm air along the pitch, while semi-automated reels handle deployment and retrieval, and fixed anchors/ratchet straps keep the system secure whether flat or inflated.
What's the difference between a raised/inflatable cover system and a flat roll-out cover?
The key advantage of the MacLeod Cover System is that it creates a raised, controlled environment above the playing surface, rather than simply covering it.
- No water pooling: Rainwater naturally runs off the raised structure instead of collecting on the pitch surface.
- A warmer growing environment: Warm air is circulated throughout the entire airspace beneath the cover, encouraging grass growth and recovery.
- Improved airflow and plant health: The air flow generated helps regulate temperature and humidity, reducing condensation and promoting healthier turf.
Can MacLeod Covers protect hybrid and synthetic pitches as well as natural grass?
Yes. The MacLeod Cover System is suitable for natural grass, hybrid and synthetic playing surfaces, providing protection from adverse weather while supporting the specific requirements of each surface type.
How quickly can the system be deployed and removed, and how many staff does it need?
The MacLeod Cover System has been designed for rapid deployment using its semi-automated reel system. A typical installation or removal can be completed by a trained crew in just a few hours, depending on the pitch size, weather conditions and site layout. Most stadiums operate the system with a team of approximately 4-6 trained personnel.
Does the system reduce under-soil heating costs?
Yes. By creating a raised, insulated environment over the playing surface and retaining warm air beneath the cover, the MacLeod Cover System significantly improves the efficiency of under-soil heating systems. This reduces heat loss, lowers energy consumption and operating costs, while maintaining excellent growing conditions.
